The origins of paper are deeply entwined with the progress of human culture and civilization. Throughout history, various civilizations such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans employed a paper-like material known as "Papyrus" for writing purposes. However, it was in ancient China where the foundations of today's paper were first established. Since its inception, paper has served as the primary medium for transmitting information and knowledge, shaping the development of societies across the globe.
As populations grew and the necessity to disseminate knowledge, education, and information on a larger scale became apparent, the demand for paper experienced a tremendous surge. In earlier times, paper held immense value and was regarded as an art form due to its remarkable benefits. The techniques involved in its creation were often safeguarded as cherished secrets. The tradition of handmade paper production in India dates back to the third century BC, where it quickly gained popularity among a particular class of artisans known as "Kagzi's." Derived from the Urdu word 'Kavas,' meaning paper, the name perfectly encapsulates their expertise and dedication to the craft. Regrettably, the number of artisans belonging to this revered community has dwindled in recent years.
Nestled in the town of Sanganer, near Jaipur, resides a small enclave of Kagzi artisans, who serve as the backbone of the local handmade paper industry. Our historical roots can be traced back to the 14th century during the reign of Firoze Shah Tughlaq. Even in those bygone eras, the Kagzi artisans meticulously crafted handmade paper, which found its purpose in the reproduction of official documents, miniatures, calligraphy, the Holy Quran, and meticulous record-keeping. It was during the 16th century that Raja Man Singh, the illustrious ruler of Ambar, brought the Kagzi artisans to Sanganer, where he settled them along the serene banks of the Saraswati River. This strategic location provided them with easy access to the pristine waters essential for their craft. As time passed, Sanganer emerged as one of the preeminent centers for paper production in North India, proudly carrying forward the legacy of Kagzi Papers.
